MULTILAYER “Welcome” Invented, directed and animated by nueveojos.
MULTILAYER is a three-dimensional video installation that creates a volumetric video with the superposition of 5 transparent layers: a technique already explored in static image and that for the first time can be seen with moving image in a dialogue between rhythm and space, giving the first step towards a new concept of holographic cinema.
MULTILAYER is an installation that works both for outdoor spaces (night) and indoors and is designed to be part of light and video-art festivals or to be exhibited in museums and galleries of contemporary art.
The installation is totally autonomous and only needs two sockets for video and sound, since all the technical equipment and wiring is inside the installation, offering the viewer a minimalist object clean of cables.
It has a robust video playback system, normally used in museums, and can play for months in a loop without losing a synchrony frame. You can also play or stop the video in a very simple way from a tablet or a mobile phone without the need of any external technical control.
The public capacity in each pass is between 140 and 160 people (60 seated + about 80-100 people standing).
MULTILAYER has been released with the piece of 7 min. entitled "Welcome”, directed and postproduced by nueveojos studio in Barcelona and directed by two of its members: Mariona Omedes and Carles Mora.
“Welcome” is a monochromatic film divided between semi-abstract graphic animation and fictional narrative with an intentionally non-obvious background of video-reporting on the current situation of refugees around the world; a self-critical reflection on something that disturbs us, given that today we are passive witnesses of the largest migratory flow since the Second World War.
Currently more than 65 million people have been forced to escape from their countries of origin, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Conflicts, often derived from the intervention of the “First World”, are usually the main causes that force these people to flee their homes. They seek to find a better life and that is why they try to reach Europe. But these are stories do not always have a happy ending.
MULTILAYER “Welcome” has been premiered at Mercè's celebrations of Barcelona in 2018, within MAC Festival, programmed at Parc de la Ciutadella for 3 days, with a total of 90 passes and an unquestionable success.
Mariona Omedes and Carles Mora have directed together many videoart projects such as large format set designs, multimedia shows and video installations for museums.
Founders of the audiovisual creation studio nueveojos together with Karin du Croo, they are a team of post-production specialized filmmakers who enjoy a great career and recognition.
Nueveojos has also been one of the pioneers of mapping in Barcelona. Some of its works have been seen at the Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine (Paris), at the Catalunya Pavilion at the Shanghai Universal Exhibition in 2010 or at the façade of Gaudí's Casa Batlló, where they performed one of their most memorable mappings, in 2012.
The power of MULTILAYER lies in its innovative component.
By means of the sum of very simple technologies and techniques and very precise calculations, the installation invented by Carles Mora becomes a visual experience never seen before.
We have not only created an installation, but we have created a new audiovisual format with its own narrative language, and we are convinced that in a few years it will become another format.
Thus it was possible to verify in the premiere where the spectators, astonished, wanted to guess how it worked.
It has not wanted to reveal more information about its internal functioning since in its simplicity lies the magic.
The structure consists of 5 iron frames of 30mm with detachable legs. The wooden bases of 30 mm act as a counterweight, and added to the micro perforations of the transparent screens, make each module unmovable by the wind.
The public can see the play standing or sitting on small benches, as if it was a mini cinema.
It requires a day of assembly and adjustments. Example:
09:00 – 15:00 (6 h.) Unloading, assembly and set up of the 5 iron structures.
16:00 – 18:00 (2 h.) Assembly of technical equipment (projection, screens, wiring and sound).
18:00 – 20:00 (2 h.) Projection adjustments (in case of outdoors events, from nightfall).
3 h. of disassembly approx.
– Power supply: 2 x schucko of 16A.
– 24 hours surveillance service (from assembly to disassembly).
– Camerino or closed room with key to store equipment, packagings...
– In outdoor assemblies, and with the goal of avoiding light pollution , it is advisable to cover lampposts and keep clear of any other residual light that may affect the projection.
